Well, certainly I have chatted about restaurants in earlier posts, although have you ever dined at one located in an airport? If you have, then perhaps it was one of those larger city ones. However, did you also know that there can be smaller airports (you know, ones that are mainly used by smaller propeller-driven planes) can have such restaurants as well? That is right, and my father and I have eaten at one such smaller airport restaurant a few times.
First of all, where is airport simply is? It is southwest of Janesville and north of Beloit in Wisconsin, and its name is the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport.
Now, if you also thought these kinds of smaller airports do not really have eateries at all, just think again! At least at the SWRA, inside is the one, the only…BESSIE’S DINER!
Bessie’s Diner may have a traditional breakfast and lunch menu for children, teens, and adults, yet there are a few things that actually make this place stand out. One, as you can see in the two images just above, this restaurant has its aviation theme, not to mention all of the model plane decorations hanging from its ceiling!
Two, I am not joking, this place was named after the first ever woman to fly solo a plane – Bessica “Bessie” Raiche, in 1910!
Lastly, three, Bessie’s Diner is located right in front of a tiny plane parkway! That is right, not only are you able to see small propeller planes right by where you dine, but you can additionally see them taxi in and out of that parkway, start up and shut down, and them taking off in the distance. Sure, a number of other airports have places where you may eat right by a window, by larger airplane planes, yet many other airports do not have ones where you may eat by smaller, private ones!
And yeah, dad and I sure have seen planes like that start up, shut down, taxi, and so on from that diner area! So if you do live anywhere near that Rock County, Wisconsin area, this would simply be one restaurant I would recommend going to yourself. Just caution though – I would recommend going on weekdays if you can, since otherwise, if you head there on weekends, the place can be incredibly busy, and will you have have to wait up to half an hour in these cases! And the place is also always only open between 7 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon.
P.S. Rest in Peace, Bessie Raiche (April 1875 – April 11, 1932).
